Local Photographer Closes Business to Pursue Squirrel Photography Full-time
By Mark Edwin
Some of Ben's closest friends know that he started his career photographing squirrels in the college Park. What most do not know is that he never gave up on his dream to be the next great squirrel photographer. Possibly the only one. For the last 18 years Ben has spent every spare moment walking around the park in search for the perfect squirrel photo.
Ben asked; "Have you ever walked in or near the park and watched a squirrel run up a tree then stop at look at you? That's probably Alex. He's very inquisitive". When asked if he named all the squirrels Ben replied; “No. That would be weird. Just the ones that talk to me.”
When asked how things have changed over the years Ben said; "When I started back in 1999 we used film cameras. Now with digital cameras every time I take a photo the squirrels want to see the back of the camera. At first it was cute. Now it's annoying."
Running a successful wedding & portrait business was just to make ends meet until he got his big break. “Things are finally starting to happen” Ben said. He has recently been commissioned to produce magazine covers for some big name magazines including: “Squirrels Weekly”, “Squirrels Monthly”, “Squirrel Digest” and of course “Deez Nutz”.
