Former Actor Opens Coaches Cafe in Downtown Waynesburg
By James Louis
Coaches Cafe recently opened on High Street in downtown Waynesburg to quick success. But it’s not Matt the owners first claim to fame. Matt was a dedicated understudy for a lovable purple character for many years before being called upon for 1 day in November 1998.
The day started like any other. Matt woke up early in his mother's basement to rehearse his lines just in case the call came. Then, his beeper when off. It was the call he has been waiting for. Matt was going to be Barney. The original actor had developed a common but highly contagious skin disease. This was the break Matt had been praying for.
Matts dedication to his craft paid off. He was amazing. He was so good the director offered him the full-time job. However Matt had to turn it down as he spent the next few weeks in the hospital dealing with an aggressive unidentified mysterious rash.
The part of Barney was sadly given to someone else. But that hasn’t stopped Matt from bragging about his acting days. Just ask him. Stop by anytime at Coaches Cafe on High Street, Waynesburg this November and sing a line or two of the Barney theme song and get a FREE lettuce upgrade on any sandwich.
